The Weekender: Boston Events - The Boston Day Book

Happy May! We hope that you have a fun weekend in store. There are a ton of great events happening around the city over the next few days, including several art walks, pop-ups, and plenty to do outside. Here are a few ideas if you find yourself around the city:

April Soderstrom DIY Pop-Up

Local jewelry designer April Soderstrom is hosting a DIY pop-up at the children’s boutique, CouCou this Sunday. The South End store’s playroom will transform into a mini jewelry studio for kids and their parents to create custom bracelets. More details here.

Fenway Open Studios

Celebrate spring, art, and Mother’s Day at the Fenway Open Studios this Sunday. The Fenway studios in the National Historic Landmark building are only open one weekend a year (!) for this annual event. What a neat opportunity to get inspired and see what the artists of the Fenway neighborhood are up to! Be sure to visit one of our favorite local artists, Mary Hughes. More details here.

SoWa Art Walk

This Saturday and Sunday, explore the South End with the 15th annual SoWa Art Walk. Meet artists in their studios, view the latest exhibits, and enjoy this vibrant community of over 200 artists.

Women in Comedy Festival

Are you in need of a good laugh? Us too. This weekend, attend one of the many events at the Women in Comedy Festival. Over 100 comedians from all across the country will gather in the Greater Boston area for a weekend of laughs and fun. Performers include headliners you may know, such as Phoebe Robinson (HBO’s 2 Dope Queens), Nikki Glaser (Comedy Central’s Not Safe w/ Nikki Glaser), improv team Wild Horses (featuring Lauren Lapkus, Stephanie Allynne, Mary Holland, and Erin Whitehead), and Corinne Fisher & Krystyna Hutchinson from Guys We F**ked.  Laura recently interviewed the festival’s co-producer Elyse Schuerman, which you can read here.

The Patios at City Hall Plaza are Back

Once the weather warms up in New England, everyone just wants to be outside… and with good reason! The patios at City Hall Plaza just re-opened yesterday, and we’re looking forward to spending time relaxing there this summer. Things to look forward to include beer from Wachusett Brewing, free grills available for public use, and rotating food trucks. More info here.

Goat Cuddle Party

Have you ever wanted to cuddle a goat? If yes, your opportunity knocks this weekend at The Trustee’s Goat Cuddle Party at Chestnut Hill Farm in Southborough. In addition to having a chance to snuggle the goats, there will be goat milking demonstrations and some crafts, too. Fun for all ages!

Alvin Ailey Dance

The Celebrity Series brings the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater to Boston again this weekend. The dance company has been changing the perception of American dance and celebrating the African-American cultural experience for over 40 years, and has performed in 71 countries on six continents. More info and tickets here.

Western Avenue Arts Walk

It’s the weekend for art walks! In conjunction with Arts First Allston, the Western Avenue Arts Walk covers 12 unique spots along Western Avenue in Allston. The walk provides an opportunity to learn more about public art in the neighborhood. Details here.

MayFair in Harvard Square

Enjoy free music in Harvard Square this Sunday at the 36th annual MayFair. Club Passim in partnership with the Harvard Square Business Association will be presenting some of Boston’s best artists. Additional details and the full line-up can be viewed here.
