While some flocked to museums when they reopened, seeking an escape from a pandemic-stricken world, the state’s largest cultural institutions saw a fraction of the attendance they drew before Covid-19.
In 2019, the top 20 museums collectively drew close to 9 million visitors. The next year, as a pandemic shuttered museums for months and restricted gatherings, the top 20 museums reported a collective attendance of just over 2.8 million.
